About Me

2023 FJE photo_sabcs [1]_edited_edited.j

I began my journey in the medical field in Spain, earning my MD and PhD at the University of Zaragoza School of Medicine. Post-graduation, I moved to the United States to deepen my clinical skills, completing my residency in internal medicine at Cooper University Hospital and a fellowship in medical oncology at Georgetown University Medical Center.

This path led me to the renowned Department of Breast Medical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where I grew into the role of a tenured Full Professor, focusing on targeted therapy in oncology. In 2013, I took a significant step forward, joining NYU Langone Health as the Director of Breast Medical Oncology and Associate Director of Clinical Investigation. In 2021, I transitioned to Lenox Hill Hospital. Here, I'm serving as the Chief of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology and as the Director of Breast Cancer Translational Research at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute. I also teach as a Professor of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

A major part of my career has been dedicated to advancing treatments and immunotherapies for breast cancer. I've worked on groundbreaking therapies like trastuzumab, pertuzumab, and lapatinib, and my team and I have extensively researched resistance mechanisms to HER2 targeted therapies. I've also led several clinical trials to combat drug resistance. My dedication to medical science is reflected in my publication of over 200 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and book chapters, with an H-index of 84.

I'm committed to top-notch patient care and education, underscored by my board certification in medical oncology and my roles as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation.
